Program Overview


Welcome to Georgetown Evening & Weekend English

The English Language Center (ELC) at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies is proud to announce the launch of its part-time Evening & Weekend English program. Formerly known as “Continuing Studies English,” the program focuses on designing and delivering effective Conversational English, ESL Business English, and TOEFL Test Prep courses for the DC community. As always, all courses will be offered on the University’s historic main campus.

Eight-Week Summer 2018 Semester (May - July) Courses Offered:

  • Evening Conversational English
    (Integrated Communication Skills & Communicative Grammar)
  • Evening ESL Business English
    (ESL Business Communication & ESL Business Writing)
  • Saturday TOEFL Test Preparation

Course Registration Schedule: Dates:
10% Early Enrollment Discount period Feb 27 - March 26
Full Tuition Enrollment period March 27 - April 26
Late Tuition Enrollment period April 27 - May 9
Course registration closed May 10 - end of semester
Placement Testing Schedule:  
Mandatory Placement Tests for new AND returning students May 12 - 17
Summer 2018 Semester Academic Schedule:  
8-week semester classes start May 19, 23 & 24
8-week semester classes end July 14, 18 & 19

Program Highlights:

  • All teaching faculty have a master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field
  • Weeknight (7-9pm) and Saturday (9am-1pm) courses are held on Georgetown's historic main campus (3700 O St NW, Washington, DC 20057)
  • Classes are limited to 18 students to ensure each student receives personalized instruction
  • Summer students receive 3.2 CEUs awarded for each successfully completed 8-week class (3.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) awarded for 9-week spring and fall classes)
  • Au pairs and other J-1 visa holders: CEUs count toward the U.S. State Department's educational study requirement
  • Free shuttle buses are available for weeknight and Saturday classes
  • $4 flat rate student parking is available for weeknight classes with free parking for Saturday classes

Integrated Communication Skills

Practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in English to improve your ability to communicate in real life situations.

    Required language proficiency: Can speak and write in loosely connected sentences, can ask and respond to questions, and can understand short predictable texts.

Practice English grammar within a communicative environment to improve your accuracy in speaking and writing.

ESL Business Communication

Strengthen your professional English skills for success in a business environment using Harvard Business Review case studies.

  • ESL Business Communication - (XEFL-310)
    Required language proficiency: Can communicate in basic situations, write short compositions in present, past, and future tenses, and understand familiar spoken and written texts.

TOEFL Test Prep

Develop advanced speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in preparation for the internet-based TOEFL exam.

Steps

Details

#1: Choose a Summer '18 course

Choose a Conversational English, ESL Business English, or TOEFL Test Prep course from the sections listed above. If you are not sure which course to register for, email csenglish@georgetown.edu or call 202-687-4592 for guidance.

#2: Register online

Use the online payment portal to create your Georgetown student profile and register for one-to-three courses with a debit or credit card (Click HERE for detailed instructions). Click HERE to view a list of all available program courses.

#3: Take placement test

All new and returning students must take a placement test at Georgetown's Intercultural Center (ICC). You will receive your placement test date and time in a "course registration confirmation" email after registering on the online payment portal.

#4: Receive final course placement

Final course assignments are based on placement test scores and course section availability.
Note: you will receive an email will final course placement information including your instructor, classroom, and textbook.

#5: Participate in course Students purchase textbooks and attend 8-week Summer course(s).
